## Comprehensive Oral Pathology

Oral pathology encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial region — including the lips, cheeks, tongue, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, jaws, and salivary glands. Dr. Jenkins is trained to identify, biopsy, and treat a wide range of oral pathological conditions, from benign cysts and tumors to oral cancer.

## Warning Signs You Should Not Ignore

The inside of a healthy mouth is smooth and pink. Any change in this appearance warrants evaluation. Warning signs include: white or red patches anywhere in the mouth, a sore that bleeds easily and doesn't heal within two weeks, a lump or thickening in the cheek, difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving the jaw or tongue, a persistent sore throat or feeling that something is caught in the throat, and numbness or pain in any area of the mouth or face. These symptoms do not always indicate cancer, but they always deserve prompt professional evaluation.

## Biopsy and Diagnosis

When a suspicious lesion is identified, a biopsy is the only definitive way to determine its nature. Dr. Jenkins performs incisional and excisional biopsies in our office under local anesthesia. The tissue sample is sent to an oral pathology laboratory for microscopic analysis, and results are typically available within 7–10 days. We then discuss the findings and any necessary treatment with you in detail.

## Treatment of Oral Pathological Conditions

Treatment depends on the diagnosis. Benign cysts and tumors are typically removed surgically. Malignant lesions require coordination with oncology specialists for a comprehensive treatment plan that may include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Dr. Jenkins works closely with local oncologists and hospital-based teams to ensure coordinated, comprehensive care for patients with oral cancer.

## Frequently Asked Questions

What is an oral cancer screening?

An oral cancer screening is a visual and tactile examination of all oral tissues looking for abnormal changes. It takes about 5 minutes and is painless. We recommend annual screenings for all adults, especially those who use tobacco or alcohol.

How is a biopsy performed?

A small tissue sample is removed from the suspicious area under local anesthesia. The procedure takes 15–30 minutes and causes minimal discomfort. The sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis.

What are the most common oral pathological conditions?

Common conditions include aphthous ulcers (canker sores), mucoceles, fibromas, dentigerous cysts, odontogenic keratocysts, ameloblastomas, and oral squamous cell carcinoma (oral cancer).

Who is at highest risk for oral cancer?

Risk factors include tobacco use (smoking or smokeless), heavy alcohol consumption, HPV infection (particularly HPV-16), prolonged sun exposure (for lip cancer), and a personal or family history of oral cancer. However, oral cancer can occur in people with no risk factors.
